New Year, New York: An Interview with Katherine Mills

2016 is a year of new beginnings and many firsts for students my age: it’ll be our first time living away from home, first time encountering professors and campus life, and the first time taking classes that don’t match the routine 7-to-3 schedule to which we’ve become so accustomed over the years. At the same time, 2016 is also a year of reminiscing on how we’ve changed and grown in the years before us. I had the pleasure of interviewing my YouTuber friend and Seventeen Beauty Smartie Katherine Mills about the past, the future, the Big Apple, and her place in it all as she takes on fashion blogging and advances into the new year.

Just to give my readers a bit of a background, when did you start YouTube?

K: I started YouTube in July of 2013. I was bored because I had just moved to Nashville and hadn’t made any friends yet, so it was something to keep me busy.

You started a new blog with the same name as your channel, katherinehunter. What made you decide to expand into blogging?

K: I started blogging out of the convenience of it. Filming and editing lookbooks became difficult to do regularly, so blogging was a better option where I could incorporate more fashion into my brand. That’s primarily what I’m passionate about.

So having seen both sides now, what are some pros and cons of blogging in contrast to YouTubing?

K: A benefit of blogging is that it’s faster than filming and uploading a YouTube video. The biggest con for me would be that it takes a lot more to express your personality, since you lose the visual and auditory aspects you get from video.

Is there anything you’re hoping to learn from your blogging experience?

K: I’m hoping to improve my writing skills and to grow an audience on multiple platforms.

Has anything about your style changed over the course of 2015?

K: 2015 was definitely a year of change for me. I met new people and was exposed to many new styles–I definitely found a lot more of myself this year in what I wore.

That being said, is there a new look you want to test out in 2016?

K: I would love to play around with more streetwear styles just because of the comfort and ease of all the pieces. The Yeezy collection and the revamping of Adidas made me really excited to see sportswear on the runways.

Any other 2016 goals or resolutions?

K: I’m hoping to move to New York this year, so I think that it’ll have a big influence on both my general style and my winter wardrobe.

To close us out, sum up 2015 style in three words.

K: Unpredictable, experimental, limitless.
