Music Spotlight: Kendrick Lamar “Swimming Pools (Drank)” George Barnett Cover

So I know I’ve been relatively absent this month, but things have been really crazy around here and there’s been little to no time to produce content. If you’re following me on Instagram, you know about my recent car accident and all that jazz. It’s whatever.

Anyway, today’s Music Spotlight is actually the best cover I’ve ever encountered of anything ever. George Barnett took Kendrick Lamar’s hip hop hit “Swimming Pools (Drank)” and injected a hard shot of strong indie influence, and the result is this amazing little package of hard core passion and innovation. This was probably my favorite track of last spring, and I’ve recently been reviving that old spirit of head swinging and fist pumping.

First of all, the original track of “Swimming Pools” is freaking amazing to begin with. The “Pull up, (drank) head shot, (drank)” is is something that I’m missing from the cover that I wish George had incorporated. But seriously, that’s the only problem I have with the cover. What Barnett did was take a hip hop staple and make it more palatable for those less accustomed to Lamar’s genre. George Barnett has created a bridge between Indie Rock and Rap, and I am more than willing to cross it. In fact, I’m pretty sure I already have.

Below are the music videos to both the original version by Kendrick Lamar and the George Barnett’s cover. Which one do you like best?
